Mitsubishi Electric Marks 30th Anniversary of Livingston Factory

Mitsubishi Electric Marks 30th Anniversary of Livingston Factory, Celebrates Milestone in Heat Pump Production

Mitsubishi Electric has celebrated the 30th anniversary of its advanced manufacturing facility in Livingston, Scotland. The factory, which has been producing air conditioning units for three decades and heat pumps since 2009, is the largest heat pump manufacturer in the UK.

The Livingston plant plays a crucial role in the UK’s green economy and the broader transition to low-carbon heating. It currently employs 1,840 people and has been a significant contributor to investment in Scotland’s green economy.

To commemorate the milestone, Mitsubishi Electric hosted an anniversary event at the factory on 6th July. The event was attended by key government and industry figures, including Patrick Harvie, Minister for Zero Carbon Buildings, Hannah Bardell, MP for Livingston, and Tadashi Fujiwara, the Consul General of Japan in Edinburgh.

Continuous investment from Mitsubishi Electric, coupled with support from Scottish Enterprise, has enabled the Livingston factory to expand and increase its heat pump production. “The Livingston factory has been manufacturing heat pumps for well over a decade now, and today offers an important opportunity to mark its invaluable contribution to the green economy,” said Rodney Ayre, Senior Department Manager at Livingston.

In addition to celebrating its 30th anniversary, Mitsubishi Electric also marked the production of its fifth-million product – the new Ecodan R290 air source heat pump for residential buildings. The R290 heat pump, with its low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant and flow temperatures of up to 75°C, offers significant benefits for home heating.

Russell Dean, Residential Product Group Director at Mitsubishi Electric, highlighted the importance of transitioning to low-carbon heating solutions. “We must decarbonise our building stock now, and changing the way we heat our homes will play a critical role in how this is achieved. The production of the Ecodan R290 means we can now provide a heat pump for every home, helping to drive heat pump adoption across the UK and Europe,” he said.
